Week 5 (in Class) & 6 (Homework)
You can complete today’s work on your own time. (We will not meet in person June 2nd). Watch the film Precious. (You can rent it in video stores or on Netflix; you can even rent movies (for a small fee) now on YouTube: www.YouTube.com/Precious.) It’s also available in countless NYPL branches: http://catalog.nypl.org/iii/encore/search/C%7CSprecious;jsessionid=82F11763566B3DD7FA5B808EA0928C88?lang=eng)
Even if you have seen the film I’m asking you to watch it again because your viewing of it will change after having read the novel. Take notes while watching the film. Write down anything that strikes you as interesting. Be sure to note the differences in the film.
In a short essay, compare and contrast the film with the novel. Some questions you may want to consider (though obviously you will not be able to address these all in such a short space): What were some of the differences between the film and the novel? Did those differences effect the story and if so, how? Were the characters different than you envisioned them when reading the novel? Did your perception of the characters change and, if so, how? Were the filmic devices used (dream sequences, camera work, montages, etc) effective to you? Why or why not? Provide specific examples from both the film and the novel to substantiate your claims. When citing the novel, provide proper page citation.
ESSAY DUE
Your essay is due week 6 and should be at least 3 pages long. DO NOT USE THE INTERNET to answer this question. Please post your essay on your blog and bring a hard copy to class. This is your ESSAY #1 so make sure you leave time for edits.
