Occupy Wall Street & the Top 1%

I learned something from my students today about something I’d never heard of: Maybach, a new luxury car created by Mercedes with a price tag that pushes almost ½ a million bucks. Apparently, Kanye West & Jay Z dismantled one of these cars in a recent music video. In the news, Kanye West also showed up at Occupy Wall Street (with Russell Simmons) this week, and rumors – and Tweets – abounded approximating how much Kanye’s jeans cost. Of course it raises questions about celebrity culture and their support of Occupy Wall Street. Since the focal point of the protests is to highlight the growing division between the rich and the poor, it begs the question: can those who represent the “1%” have a place – and a voice – in the protests?
